Don't let "Dorito dogs" happen to you....

Well, at least not unexpectedly....

My husband went camping on Friday a distance from home with our children that would be old enough to enjoy the experience. The experience was enjoyed, though not entirely without its glitches...

The good:

---Those who have been reading this blog for awhile may remember that we purchased a tent last year for emergency purposes. This was the first time it had been used outside of our backyard, and reportedly everything went well.

The not-as-good:

--My husband left home without the hot dogs they had been planning to cook over a campfire. Hence, there were hot dog buns, Doritos, juiceboxes, and the makings for s'mores. But no actual hotdogs. What to do?

Well, in this instance, there were "Dorito dogs" for supper. My children liked them a lot, actually, so taste and appetite fatigue don't figure much into this particular experience. Nutrition does (please don't tell me what's actually in hot dogs--I like them and don't really want to know... :) in terms of protein, though I figure one night of "Dorito dogs" isn't going to hurt anyone, and we don't eat that many hot dogs around here anyway--they are more of a campout treat. What really struck me was the thought, what have I forgotten in terms of food storage?

I know what I need more of, (stored fruit comes to mind) but is there anything I just have actually forgotten about, that would lead to some really weird substitutions if I didn't have it long-term? Doritos aren't a long-term storage item for us, but if we had some in storage they would be a comfort food, and we do have some comfort foods in storage, though there is probably room for improvement in that area as well. (Could there ever be enough comfort foods in storage? :)

Is there anything you have forgotten about? Personally, I think it's time for me to check the store room....

I actually ran out of ketchup and mayo this week. I know they are not essentials but they sure do make a lot of meals taste good.

Need to check the condiments and kitchen paper items (wax paper, coffee filters, etc. not paper towels).

I say the more comfort foods, the better! I'm all for the comfort foods! That's pretty obvious by my pot belly, I'm afraid!

I haven't tried the "dorito dogs" but it sounds like something I might have to try out! Might come in handy some day!

Anonymous--Ketchup is almost a necessity around here, and that is something I haven't really thought about how much I would need for a 3-month supply, so thanks for the reminder. I occasionally pick up extra aluminum foil and the like, but wax paper would be great too--thanks for your comment!

HermitJim--The Dorito dogs were pretty popular, so much so that I may have to give them a try myself sometime. :) Have to agree with you about the comfort foods--they're hard to beat. Thanks for your comment!

Bellen--Glad we're not the only household that has a great need/love for ketchup. However, if I looked in my store room right now, I'm pretty sure I'd find a lot more diced tomatoes than ketchup, (and the diced tomatoes are much lower on the popularity scale) so I need to get working on that deficiency. Since you liked the Doritos in the hot dog buns, try them tucked into a hamburger. Any kind of chip will add a delicious crunch to your burger with every bite!

It sure helps to talk to others to see what we each might not think about needing or wanting in our storage. I was reminded a few weeks ago while reading over at The View from Treesong's blog that I needed to get a new axe and maul and also to order propane delivered. I guess we should each just take a moment as we go through our day to look at what we touch and see if we have more.

2 Tramps--I have certainly learned a lot from other people through blogs that I probably would never have met otherwise, and I'm grateful. That's a great idea to think about what we use and see what we might be overlooking--and as to the hamburgers, haven't tried that, but in my sandwiches as a kid I liked to put potato chips in as a layer....:) Thanks for your comment!

This reminds me of our last camping trip. I managed to forget (I'll at least take the blame for forgetting) the tortillas for tacos after my wife spent her precious time getting four lbs of taco meat cooked up. Imagine her surprise when it was taco day and I had left the tortillas at home. She had the brilliant idea of using frito chips in a bowl instead though, and it was a huge hit! Amazing how versatile chips can be...
