Your BYs may be more valuable now...

...if you bought the same kind of "dinner soups" (don't add water type) that I did at the end of last year. What was about $1.50 a can is now $1.98 a can in our neighborhood. It may not sound like that big of a leap, but it all adds up--hope it is better where you live. And if it was always more expensive for you, it makes me wonder how expensive it is for you now...

This weekend is the U.S. Postal Service food drive in our area, so they left us a bag to leave food out in tomorrow. If you have any BYs that you decide you don't want, or can spare a couple of cans of food that you just have around the house, I'm sure they would appreciate your donation. It's just getting more and more expensive out there.

Hope everyone is still finding a way to put a little food away every once in a while--you could always start now with BYs for this year. :) Scary that it would appear that prices will only continue to go up, so buying now is money ahead for later...

Our thoughts and prayers are with Boston...

Another month, another post...

Whew, February is almost gone! Seems like I need to give myself another goal and project to make myself post on time--sometimes I think of things to blog about and then wait too long to post them, so that's not helpful at all...

However, the end of the month did make me go looking for more food storage recipes to try, and I came across this post today, over at Jamie Cooks It Up!, which has ideas for food storage as well as 40 (yay, 40!) recipes you can try. Granted, I have not checked all of them out, but I will probably try the pretzel bites one first, so far at least. I love new ideas to try for food storage ingredients, and look forward to exploring the Jamie Cooks It Up! blog more thoroughly. Thanks to the author there for the information! If you try any of the recipes there, let me know how it works out!

Thanks to anyone and everyone who has come back to read--hope everyone is doing well!

Let the rotation begin...

On Sunday-Monday we got quite a lot of snow. Enough for me to think, especially after last year, "Ah, now that's more like the Idaho I know..."

And then some, because we actually got a snow day on Monday. Looking for something for my children to eat, I found that the kind of soup that one of them probably likes best was available in my BY stash--the potato, ready to eat variety. So, I am now short a couple of cans in my BY stash, but I will replace them soon. Have you started to use your BY cans yet? Don't let them get so old that you would question their edible quality once you really needed them...

And I found this link to economical meals recently--important to make your money stretch as food prices go up. I haven't tried these yet, but a couple of them look like great possiblities for eating here. They aren't necessarily good for food storage per se, but the more you save on your every day food, the more you have for the food storage budget, and if you aren't using your food storage yet, you could intersperse these meals with food storage ones--work into it gradually until your food storage meals are just part of the meal rotation, and maybe the entire rotation... :)

Just an idea--hope everyone had a great January, and thanks for coming back after my looonnng break!

The final BY: #53

My BY for the day: Can of evaporated milk

If I were adding anything to go along with this, it would be: This one has been visited again and again, but I would say that adding water would make it stretch for your cooking/drinking purposes...

Happy New Year, everyone! Wishing you all the best for 2013!

Buying ahead, blogging ahead: BY #52 for Dec. 30

My BY for the day: Can of chili

If I were adding anything to go along with this, it would be: For fun, I would say corn chips. Don't think I have mentioned that yet--hard to say without going back through 51 other BY posts. 51! Hard to believe that we are almost there... I personally like chili because it's filling and goes with a lot of other things like the previously mentioned (or not :) tamales, tortillas, hot dogs, and the like. I do think I have mentioned all of the above, except maybe the corn chips, but sometimes repetition is good, right? :)

Hope you are having a great weekend!

BY #51: More soup...

My BY for the day: Salisbury steak with mushrooms and onions soup (ready-to-eat)

If I were adding anything to go along with this, it would be: I would probably put it over potatoes, as previously mentioned on another similar BY, but I did want to mention that if you have similar-but-not-same soups, they can go well together. Ever open a can of chicken and rice soup, and a can of chicken noodle soup, when you meant to open two of the same kind of soup? This, or something similar has happened around here, and it has turned out ok. I would mix beef based soups together, or chicken based soups together, but I would hesitate to mix totally different soups together. They might turn out, but they might not. Haven't tried any weird combinations, but if I were hungry enough, I'm sure in an emergency I would eat them anyway...

Wow, only 2 BYs left! Anyone care to share something they added that wasn't a can? Or something that I haven't thought of that was?
